Brenda Fricker was born in Dublin, Ireland, and began her acting career in television and theatre during the 1960s. She appeared in Ireland's first soap opera Tolka Row and later took roles in British television including Coronation Street. Her breakthrough came with the 1989 film My Left Foot, where she portrayed the mother of Christy Brown, played by Daniel Day-Lewis. In 1990, she made history as the first Irish actress to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Fricker became widely recognized for her role as nurse Megan Roach in the BBC medical drama Casualty, appearing from the show's first episode in 1986 through 2010. She also gained international fame as the pigeon lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). Her career spanned over five decades across film, television, and theatre.

Fricker died at the age of 81, tributes from colleagues and fans highlighting her authenticity, wit, and talent. Her agent Phil Belfield and former Casualty co-stars Derek Thompson and Cathy Shipton honored her memory as one of the finest actors they had ever worked with.
