James Gilstrap was an American singer and session musician born in Daingerfield, Texas in 1946. After serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve during the Vietnam War, he began his music career in the early 1970s as a backing vocalist in Stevie Wonder's group Wonderlove, appearing on albums including Talking Book and Innervisions. He sang the opening lines of Wonder's classic "You Are the Sunshine of My Life."
Gilstrap signed with Chelsea Records in 1975 and achieved his biggest solo success with "Swing Your Daddy," which reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and number 1 in the Netherlands. He recorded two solo albums during the 1970s and worked as a session artist for various artists including Elkie Brooks and Whitney Houston.
He provided the male lead vocals for the theme music to the 1970s television series Good Times and sang the theme for the 1990s cartoon TaleSpin. His recording credits also included work on Quincy Jones' Body Heat album and the soundtrack for the film Grease. Gilstrap died on July 18, 2026, at the age of 79.
