Joseph Kevin Keegan was born on 14 February 1951 and became one of English football's most celebrated figures. He began his playing career at Scunthorpe United in 1968 before Bill Shankly signed him for Liverpool, where he won three First Division titles, two UEFA Cups, the FA Cup, and the European Cup. During this period, he became a regular member of the England national team, captaining the side on 31 occasions including at UEFA Euro 1980.

Keegan moved to Hamburger SV in 1977, where he was named European Footballer of the Year in both 1978 and 1979, helping Hamburg win the Bundesliga title and reach the 1980 European Cup final. After spells at Southampton and Newcastle United, he retired from playing in 1984 having scored 204 goals in 592 club appearances and 21 goals in 63 caps for England.

His management career began at Newcastle United in 1992, leading them to promotion and a memorable Premier League title challenge in 1995–96. He later managed Fulham, the England national team from 1999 to 2000, and Manchester City until 2005. He returned to Newcastle for a second managerial spell in 2008 before resigning later that year.
