Plas Johnson was an American jazz saxophonist best known for his iconic tenor saxophone solo on Henry Mancini's 'The Pink Panther Theme'.

Plas Johnson was born in Donaldsonville, Louisiana on July 21, 1931. He learned saxophone from his father and after Army service in 1951, attended Westlake School of Music in Los Angeles. He became one of the most sought-after session musicians in Los Angeles during the 1950s and 1960s, recording with Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Marvin Gaye, the Beach Boys, and countless other artists.
His nimble, stylish tenor saxophone solo on Henry Mancini's 1963 theme to 'The Pink Panther' became one of the most recognizable pieces of music in film history. The score won three Grammy awards and received an Oscar nomination. Johnson was a regular in Mancini's orchestra throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and began playing in Merv Griffin's studio band in 1970.
Johnson appeared in the 2008 documentary 'The Wrecking Crew,' which chronicled the vibrant era of Los Angeles session musicians. He continued performing throughout his life and was celebrated for his ability to elevate recordings with his distinctive solos. He died in Granada Hills at age 94.
