Charles Edward Young was born on February 5, 1951, and rose to prominence as a standout tight end at the University of Southern California, where he earned All‑American honors and helped the Trojans win the 1972 national championship. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
Drafted sixth overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1973, Young quickly became a Pro Bowl selection for three consecutive seasons. He later played for the Los Angeles Rams, appearing in Super Bowl XIV, and joined the San Francisco 49ers, contributing to their Super Bowl XVI victory in 1981 and playing a key role in the famed 89‑yard drive that led to "The Catch." He finished his career with the Seattle Seahawks, retiring after 13 seasons with 418 receptions, 5,106 yards, and 27 touchdowns.
After retiring, Young remained active in community service, volunteering with organizations such as United Way and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Society. He passed away in May 2026 at the age of 75.
