Particulars

David Patrick George Burke was born on 25 May 1934 in Liverpool, England, and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He began a career that spanned stage, television, film and radio.

He became widely recognised for his portrayal of Dr. John Watson opposite Jeremy Brett in Granada Television’s 1980s series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, a role he left after the first series to join the Royal Shakespeare Company with his wife. He also appeared as Joseph Stalin in Reilly, Ace of Spies, and had roles in productions such as King Lear at the National Theatre, Midsomer Murders, and The Woodlanders.

Burke was married to actress Anna Calder‑Marshall; their son Tom Burke followed him into acting. He continued to work into his later years, appearing with his son in the BBC adaptation of Number 13 and with his wife in the short film Only the Lonely.

David Burke died on 10 May 2026 at the age of 91, survived by his wife and son. His contribution to British television, especially his definitive Watson, was widely celebrated.
