John Josef Sedelmaier was born on May 31, 1933, and began his career as an art director at agencies such as Young & Rubicam and J. Walter Thompson before moving into commercial directing in the 1970s. He became renowned for reshaping television advertising by casting unconventional talent, most famously featuring Clara Peller in Wendy’s iconic “Where’s the Beef?” campaign.

Sedelmaier also created FedEx’s “Fast Talking Man” series, which became a cultural touchstone. His work earned multiple Clio Awards, Cannes Lions, and honors from the Art Directors Club of New York and the American Advertising Federation Hall of Fame. He directed the short film “OpenMinds,” which was selected for the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.

He lived in Chicago with his family, was married twice, and had three children. He died peacefully at his home on May 8, 2026, at the age of 92.
