André Lévy-Lang was born in 1937 in Alexandria and later attended the École Polytechnique, training as an engineer before moving into finance. He joined the French bank Paribas in 1974 and progressed through its hierarchy, becoming head of its Compagnie bancaire subsidiary in 1982.

In 1990 he was appointed president of Paribas, a position he held until the bank’s merger with BNP in 1999, which created the new entity BNP Paribas. During his tenure he oversaw a major transformation of the institution, guiding it through the consolidation of the French banking sector.

After the merger, Lévy-Lang retired from active management but remained a respected figure in French finance. He died on 8 August 2026 at the age of 88, surrounded by his family.
