Particulars
Elizabeth Costa de Andrade da Silva, known as Beth Andrade, was born on December 19, 1950, in Rio de Janeiro. She became a prominent figure in the world of Rio de Janeiro samba, particularly associated with Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, one of the city's most traditional samba schools.
Beth Andrade served as the first president of Estrelinha da Mocidade, a children's samba school (escola de samba mirim) that she founded in 1992. The school participates annually in the official children's samba parade held on Carnival Friday at the Marquês de Sapucaí. Her leadership helped establish this youth organization dedicated to preserving samba traditions among younger generations.
She was married to Paulinho de Andrade (Paulo Roberto de Andrade), son of Castor de Andrade, the legendary patron of Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel. Castor de Andrade was one of Brazil's most famous bicheiros (illegal lottery operators) and a major figure in Rio's carnival scene. Paulinho was murdered in October 1998, a year and a half after his father's death in 1997. Beth Andrade remained connected to the samba community throughout her life and was remembered by Mocidade as one of the great stars of the school's history.
Beth Andrade died on August 7, 2026, at the age of 75. The Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel announced her death through social media tributes, calling her "minha estrela" (my star) and acknowledging her role in a memorable era of the school's history.
