Particulars
Bob Montgomery was a dedicated advocate for motor neurone disease (MND) research and support in Australia. Over his lifetime he organized and completed five long-distance charity bike rides, raising more than $300,000 for MND research and service programs. His most recent journey, dubbed "One Last Ride," spanned roughly 5,300 kilometres from Broome in Western Australia to his hometown of Bowral in New South Wales, a feat he completed at the age of 81.
Montgomery's efforts brought national attention to the challenges faced by people living with MND and inspired many volunteers and donors to contribute to the cause. He was celebrated by MND NSW and the broader community for his perseverance, generosity, and ability to mobilise support across the country.
He died on 3 August 2026, a day after returning home from his final ride, surrounded by family and friends. His legacy continues through the funds he raised and the heightened awareness of MND that his rides generated.
