Particulars
Carolina Joana da Silva was a Brazilian professor, researcher, and ecologist widely regarded as one of the country's leading scientific references in studies on the Pantanal, wetland ecology, and ethnobiology. She spent her academic career at the Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso (Unemat), where she taught in undergraduate and graduate programs from the 2000s onward and served as pro-reitora of Research and Graduate Studies.
During her tenure as an administrator, she played a key role in expanding scientific research and implementing the university's stricto sensu graduate programs, including the creation of the Master's in Environmental Sciences in 2005. Her academic output helped deepen knowledge of wetland ecosystems and the relationship between local communities and biodiversity.
Carolina also presided over the Conselho da Reserva da Biosfera do Pantanal and served as a professor and advisor in graduate programs at Unemat and the Rede Bionorte. Her career was marked by research, teaching, and environmental advocacy, and her work made her a national reference in Pantanal-related research. She died on August 16, 2026, at age 75, from liver cancer.
