Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil was born on 22 October 1935 in Ambap village, Kolhapur district. He entered public life as a Congress activist, serving on the Kolhapur Municipal Council from 1957 to 1962 and later as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1967 to 1978. Patil shifted his focus to education, founding the D. Y. Patil Group of institutions, including universities, medical colleges, and a sports academy, which grew into a prominent network across India.

Patil's political career continued with appointments as Governor of Tripura in 2009, Governor of Bihar in 2012, and additional charge of West Bengal later in his tenure. He was honored with the Padma Shri award in 1991 for his contributions to social work and education. Throughout his life, he remained a senior figure in the Indian National Congress and a noted philanthropist.

He died on 4 August 2026 at his residence in Kolhapur after a prolonged illness, aged 92. His legacy includes a vast educational infrastructure, contributions to public service, and recognition as a visionary leader in both politics and education.
