Glenn A. Baker was an Australian journalist, commentator, author and broadcaster renowned for his vast knowledge of rock music. Born in 1952, he grew up in New South Wales and Canberra before embarking on a career that would make him one of Australia's most respected music authorities. In the mid-1970s, he worked on a research project for the Department of the Media that led to the establishment of radio station 2JJ, which later became triple j.
Baker served as the Australian editor of Billboard magazine for more than 20 years and wrote 17 books on music and travel. He provided sleeve notes for over 600 albums and won the BBC's Rock Brain of the Universe competition three times in the mid-1980s. Beyond journalism, he managed bands including Ol' 55 and Cheek, and co-founded Raven Records in 1979. He won the Australian Travel Writer of the Year award in 1995 and again in 2000.
His death at age 74 was announced in July 2026 by fellow music journalist Stuart Coupe, marking the end of a prolific career that spanned five decades and significantly shaped Australian music culture.
