James McHugh was a prominent Gaelic football forward who played for the Cill Chartha club and the Donegal county team. He helped Donegal win two Ulster Senior Football Championships and was a key member of the 1992 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winning side, earning an All Star award that year. He also claimed three Donegal Senior Football Championship titles with his club and later managed Cill Chartha.

Off the field, McHugh worked for the Electricity Supply Board and lived in County Donegal with his wife Noreen and their children. On 10 August 2026, while driving on the N3 at Drummallaght, County Cavan, he was involved in a collision with a van that caused fatal injuries. His death was widely mourned across the Gaelic Athletic Association community and by fans of Donegal football.
