Josef Deimer
1936–2026
Long-serving CSU mayor of Landshut (1970–2004) and longtime president of the Bavarian Association of Cities.
Particulars
Josef Deimer was a German CSU politician who served as Lord Mayor of Landshut for 35 years, from 1970 to 2004, making him one of the longest-serving mayors in the Federal Republic. He began his political career in 1966 when he entered the city council with the highest vote count, and three years later was elected Germany's youngest mayor. He was confirmed in office six times with up to 83.5 percent of the vote, a testament to his unusual popularity and independent-mindedness.
Deimer was known as a rebel within his own party, clashing with Bavarian minister-presidents Franz Josef Strauß and Edmund Stoiber over issues such as nuclear power, all-day schools, and EU voting rights for municipal elections. He served as president of the Bavarian Association of Cities for 30 years and as deputy president of the German Association of Cities, giving him substantial authority in municipal policy. He was also a member of the Bavarian Landtag (1966–1970) and the Bavarian Senate (1982–1999).
Among his lasting legacies is the 1,470-meter Altstadt tunnel in Landshut, named after him during his lifetime, which relieved the medieval city center of through traffic. He retired from office in 2004 and died on 12 August 2026 at the age of 90.
