Ken McCurrach
1946–2026Scottish-born Australian rugby union player who represented Western Australia and toured with the Wallabies in 1973.
Particulars
Kenneth George McCurrach was born in Keith, Scotland, in 1946. He developed his rugby skills at Harris Academy in Dundee, where he captained the first XV, before studying civil engineering at Dundee and St Andrews universities. In 1969, he emigrated to Australia under the assisted passage scheme, settling first in Perth.
In Western Australia, McCurrach played for Perth-Bayswater and the University of Western Australia, earning selection for the state team against touring international sides including the All Blacks, Springboks, and France between 1970 and 1972. He moved to Sydney in 1973 to join Eastwood, where his form secured a place in the Wallabies squad for the tour of Europe and Wales. Although he played in five matches on the tour, including a game against Italy, he remained uncapped as caps were not awarded for those fixtures. He was known as a tough, tactically astute number eight.
Away from rugby, McCurrach pursued a successful career as a civil engineer. He was also an accomplished piper. He died in Sydney in June 2026 at the age of 80.
