Particulars

Livio Berruti was born on 19 May 1939 in Turin, Italy. He emerged as a leading sprinter in the late 1950s, winning multiple Italian national titles in the 100 m and 200 m events. At the 1960 Summer Games in Rome, he captured the gold medal in the 200 metres, becoming the first European to win the event and ending the United States' dominance.

Berruti continued to compete internationally, representing Italy at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics and earning several medals at European championships and other competitions. After retiring from athletics in 1969, he worked in the communications sector, holding positions with an advertising agency, Ermenegildo Zegna, and later FIAT until 1998. He also served as one of the eight Italian flag‑bearers at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Turin Winter Games.

In recognition of his achievements, Berruti was inducted into the Italian sport Walk of Fame in 2015 and was named honorary president of the ISEF Torino in 2018. He passed away on 9 August 2026 at the age of 87 in a clinic in Turin, leaving behind his wife Silvia.
