Manmohan Singh Liberhan (11 November 1938 – 2 August 2026) was an Indian judge who served as chief justice of the Madras High Court and later the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He began his legal career at the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1964 and was elected to the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council in 1970, serving until 1987.
He is best known for heading the Liberhan Commission, a one‑man judicial inquiry appointed in December 1992 to investigate the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. The commission took 17 years and 43 extensions to complete its 1,029‑page report, which was finally submitted on 30 June 2009 and concluded that the demolition was pre‑planned and involved multiple political and religious actors.
Liberhan retired from the judiciary after his tenure as chief justice and remained a respected figure in Indian legal circles until his death in Chandigarh at the age of 87. His work on the commission left a lasting impact on the discourse surrounding communal relations and accountability in India.
