Particulars

Maurizio Giammusso was a long-serving Italian journalist, writer, and theater critic who devoted his career to the world of theater. Born in Rome, he became one of the pillars of the culture and entertainment desk of the ANSA news agency, where he worked until 2010, and also wrote extensively for the printed press, notably the Corriere della Sera, and in later years for the web and the Huffington Post. He combined his reporting with the vigilant eye of a theater critic, covering Italian stage life for decades.

Giammusso was the author of numerous publications on theater, including "La fabbrica degli attori" (1988), a history of the Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica, "Eliseo un teatro e i suoi protagonisti" (1989), "Il Dante di Gassman" (1994), "Il teatro di Genova: una biografia" (2001), "Vita di Rossellini" (2004), and "Per Ecuba! Frammenti di un discorso teatrale" (2009).

His most celebrated work was "Vita di Eduardo" (1993), a comprehensive biography of the great playwright and actor Eduardo De Filippo, built on extensive research including the family's unpublished private papers. The book became a classic reference on Eduardo, went through multiple reprints and editions, and was later adapted into a stage production directed by Sergio Rubini. Giammusso also contributed to exhibitions, books, and television programs on theater, and his writing is frequently cited in Italian theater scholarship. He died at Capalbio in August 2026 at the age of 74.
