Mayumi Ogawa was born in Tokyo in 1939 and began her acting career in 1961 when she joined the Bungakuza附属研究所 alongside contemporaries Kirin Kiki and Isao Hashizume. She made her film debut in 1963 in Kaneto Shindo's "Mother" and achieved her first leading role the following year in Yusuke Watanabe's "Two Female Dogs." Ogawa became recognized for her portrayals of villainous characters and her captivating screen presence.
In 1979, she won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Supporting Actress for her performances in "Vengeance Is Mine" and "Three Undelivered Letters." Her television work included numerous appearances in NHK's prestigious Taiga drama series, including "Yoshitsune," "Takeda Shingen," and "Aoi Tokugawa Sandai."
In her personal life, Ogawa married actor Toshiyuki Hosokawa in 1967, with whom she had a daughter, before divorcing in 1973. In 2010, she became a Buddhist nun. She received the Japan Academy Prize Chairman's Award for lifetime achievement in 2026, shortly before her death on March 26 at age 86.
