Olivier Lebas was a senior officer of the French Navy, rising to the rank of vice-amiral d'escadre. A naval fighter pilot, he flew the Crusader and Super-Étendard from the decks of French carriers, including missions over hostile territory, and was decorated for bringing a seriously damaged aircraft back to the Foch.

He commanded the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and later the naval air group from 2016 to 2019, and ended his military career commanding the Atlantic maritime zone while serving as maritime prefect of the Atlantic from 2020 to 2023. After retiring, he joined Airbus in 2023 as a defense advisor.

Lebas died at age 62 on 12 August 2026 following a fall in the mountains. He was widely praised by fellow officers for his courage, determination, humility, and commitment to service.
