Raja Sen was an Indian film and television director from Kolkata, West Bengal, who won three National Film Awards over the course of his career. He first gained recognition with the acclaimed teleserial Subarnalata (1997), and went on to direct notable Bengali television series including Adarsha Hindu Hotel, Arogyo Niketan, and Desh Amaar Desh.
In feature films, Sen directed Damu (1996), which won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film, Atmiyo Swajan (1999), which won the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare, and other films such as Chakrabyuhya, Desh, Debipaksha, Krishnakanter Will, Laboratory, and Maya Mridanga. His documentary on Suchitra Mitra won the National Film Award for Best Arts/Cultural Film in 1993.
Sen also documented the lives of several legends of Bengali art and culture, including Tapan Sinha, Sombhu Mitra, and Subhas Mukhopadhyay. He was married to Papiya Sen and had two daughters, Subhasree Sen and Sreyoshi Sen. He died on 16 August 2026 at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata at the age of 71.
