Particulars
Sajjan Kumar was an Indian politician and a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress. He was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament, from Outer Delhi on multiple occasions, serving as a member of parliament in 1980, 1991, and 2004. He began his political career as a Delhi councillor in 1977 and later served as General Secretary of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, establishing himself as a significant figure in Delhi's Congress politics for decades.
Kumar's political career was ultimately defined by his conviction for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which erupted in the aftermath of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination. He was accused of inciting mobs and orchestrating attacks against Sikhs in Delhi. After years of investigation and legal proceedings, the Delhi High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment in December 2018 for his role in the murders of five family members and the burning of a gurdwara. He was convicted in a second case in February 2025 for instigating the murder of two Sikh men, receiving another life sentence.
He died while serving his life sentence in Tihar jail, having been rushed to Safdarjung Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
