Tonchai served as the appointed governor of Nonthaburi province, a region bordering Bangkok, overseeing the provincial administration and local governance. On August 10, 2026, he was shot inside the provincial government building and later died at a hospital. The attack occurred three days after a separate school shooting in the same province that left nine people dead.

The incident sparked renewed debate over gun control in Thailand, though authorities said the two shootings were not directly linked. A former lower‑house member, Charoon, was detained in connection with the governor's killing. Tonchai's death marked a rare violent loss of a high‑ranking provincial official in the country.
