General Vishwa Nath Sharma was commissioned into the 16 Light Cavalry in June 1950 after graduating from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He rose through the ranks of the Indian Army over a distinguished career spanning four decades.
Sharma served as the Chief of the Army Staff from 1988 to 1990, the highest-ranking position in the Indian Army. He was the younger brother of Major Som Nath Sharma, who became the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest wartime honour, for his courage in the 1947-48 Kashmir operations.
General Sharma passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of military excellence and service to the nation. His leadership and commitment to duty were recognized by defence officials and the Indian Army upon his death.
