Particulars

Yukio Shimomura was born in Hiroshima on January 25, 1932. As a second-year student at the old Shudo Junior High School, he was exposed to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, while working on building demolition about one kilometer from the hypocenter; he lost his mother, eldest brother, grandmother, and many classmates. He survived because he was resting in the shade on the day of the blast.

After the war he joined the football club at Shudo High School and later played as a goalkeeper for Toyo Industries (now Sanfrecce Hiroshima), helping the works team reach its first Emperor's Cup final in 1954. He was selected for the Japan national team and was part of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics squad, and also represented Japan at the 1958 Asian Games.

As a manager, Shimomura led Toyo Industries to five Japan Soccer League championships (1965-1968 and 1970) and three Emperor's Cup titles, building the club's golden era. He later managed Towa Real Estate and served as manager of the Japan national team in 1979-1980. He also coached his alma mater Shudo High School to national titles. He was inducted into the Japan Football Hall of Fame in 2015 and continued to share his atomic bomb experience with students in his later years.
